Background
WILLIAM GRAHAM was born to a mother who didn't want him. she left before his little mind could even begin to form an image of her, and his house never felt like a HOME. his father did the bare minimum to grow a child, more of a roommate than a parent. will was independent, regardless, a curious mind that craved to learn and do. while there was the occasional moment of tenderness, his father's time was consumed with work and will's time was consumed READING.he was a strange child, preferring his own company to that of others, and often totally absorbed in his own imagination. he didn't shy from morbidity, even at a young age, and often disturbed his father in casual conversation.his transition meant little to his father. will had always been interested in the "MASCULINE", always getting his hands dirty to help repair boat engines and catch dinner for the night. the only concern had been logistics— will's top surgery cost a small fortune that was only possible after years of saving between the two of them.will went to college, next. scholarships were easy for him to come by and "home" was wherever his bags were. he graduated early with double major in criminology and biology, and made very few social connections during his higher education.
A MIND AT WORK. will joined the police academy as soon as he graduated. he was a GOOD cop. smart, clever, and working well under pressure, his only weakness was talking to people. but this is where his ELEVATED EMPATHY is first noted, and proves to be a valuable asset in his work. but when he's attacked by a suspect one day, he can't bring himself to pull the trigger, and is stabbed in the shoulder as a result. he's placed on a medical leave, but he would never return to the force.instead, pursuing further education, he worked in boatyards while earning a master's in forensics at george washington university. his work is published in journals and well respected. his interests and expertise are varied, including criminal and behavior profiling and crime scene analysis.the fbi took notice of him and first, offered to work within their crime lab and then, as a special investigator. unable to pass the rigorous testing (too unstable), he would never become an official fbi agent. eventually, they settled for placing him into a teaching position at the fbi academy in quantico, virginia.finally having a HOME, even if it is empty, will begins a life for himself in earnest, purchasing a home in reston, virginia. he takes in stray dogs, eventually providing a home to seven mutts, and lives a quiet life, prior to the events of the series.
